Warren "Deb" Stephens was one of the greatest centers ever to wear the Purple and White. He was noted as an outstanding player among the most able athletes Spring Hill has ever placed upon the gridiron. "W.C." was always dependable, a driving linesman and sure tackier. As alternate-captain of the conference-leading Badgers, he was the bulwark of the Purple forward wall. It was when the going was hardest that "Deb" was at his best and he had yet to meet his peer. As a junior, he was a center on the 1929 Badgers squad that posted a 7-1 record and was undefeated in the SIAA; including wins over Southern Miss., ULL and Jacksonville State. In his Senior season, the Badgers went undefeated again in the SIAA with an overall record of 6-2 and their only two losses came at the hands of Auburn and Vanderbilt. As an end to his brilliant football career he was selected as center on the All-SIAA Team and received honorable mention on the All-Southern Team.
