Jim Murray arrived on the Hill as a highly touted high school star. An All-State standout in both basketball and baseball from Elizabeth, New Jersey, it didn’t take long for Murray to learn how to play at the college level. Despite his small stature at 5-10, he became a starter as a freshman on both the basketball and baseball teams. As a point guard Jim was known for his speed, quickness and play-making ability on the court. He had that toughness on both ends of the court that was an attribute that many players from the New York City Metro area possessed. Murray was a tenacious defender who was usually assigned the opponent’s top guard. He was named co-captain with fellow inductee Tom Bick as a sophomore, making him one of the youngest in SHC basketball history. On the diamond, Murray was known for his soft hands and slick fielding ability as an infielder. Murray’s approach to baseball was much like he was on the basketball court, with a determined scrappy and aggressive attitude. He was a key member of the 1965 baseball squad that took three out of four games from Tulane, who was a member of the SEC at the time. Jim’s timely hitting helped Coach Stan Galle’s Badgers to its first winning season in 15 years.
