Alvin Thomas Buckahults was the first Golf Pro and one of a group of men that helped redesign the Spring Hill College Golf Course, which was the first public course in Mobile. Alvin and Fr. Dorn did much of the labor themselves to make the course a playable track. Buckhaults helped organized the SHC golf teams and worked with such notables as fellow Hall of Fame Golfers Coleman McCarthy, Gordon “Buddy” Smith, Jim Fisher and John Golden. Buckhaults himself was a notable figure locally in the golf community for his ability to play right or left-handed with equal precision. The SHC Golf team under Coach Buckhaults went undefeated during a three-year run during the 1950’s with wins over many larger SEC schools, including Alabama, Mississippi State and former SEC member Tulane.
