Dr. Drayton Miller played a pivotal role in the history of Spring Hill College athletics, serving as the Badgers’ head men’s basketball coach from 1984-88 while also serving as the College’s athletic director. His influence extended well beyond the basketball court, helping shape the direction of Spring Hill athletics during an important period of growth.

As head coach, Miller compiled a 92-73 record in four seasons and guided the Badgers to three consecutive winning seasons to close his tenure. His 1987-88 squad finished 27-13, establishing a then-school record for victories, while also earning a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference tournament berth. Under Miller, Spring Hill developed into a consistent contender, and the 1988 Spring Hill basketball guide noted that the Badgers had averaged 21 wins per season over the previous four years while earning three NAIA postseason tournament bids.

Miller's greatest impact, however, may have been measured through the student-athletes he recruited and developed. He coached and recruited four future Spring Hill College Athletic Hall of Famers, including Chris Williams, who finished his career as the program's all-time leading scorer with 2,337 points, and Darin Tang, who scored 1,901 points. Miller's tenure also included future Hall of Famer Chris Nelson, while his recruiting and coaching helped establish a group of players who would leave a lasting mark on Spring Hill basketball.

His influence as athletic director extended across the department as well. Miller was responsible for hiring Frank Sims, the longtime Spring Hill baseball coach who would go on to become a Spring Hill College Athletic Hall of Famer and an American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame coach. That decision became another lasting part of Miller's legacy, connecting his leadership to the success of a program outside his own sport. Spring Hill's Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes both Miller and Sims among its distinguished inductees.

Miller's four years at Spring Hill produced 92 victories, a school-record 27-win season, multiple postseason appearances and a group of student-athletes who would become some of the most accomplished figures in Badger athletics. His legacy, however, reaches beyond his coaching record, through the players he recruited, the coaches and programs he helped shape, and his leadership as athletic director, Dr. Drayton Miller left a lasting mark on Spring Hill College.
