Captain of both 1929 and 1930 Badger football teams, "Silent", "Shinny", Sidney Tonsmiere, was a fighting, persevering and tower of strength whose natural tranquility of soul could not and cannot be unruffled even in the most feverish gridiron conflicts. Sid gave a good example of what can be accomplished by hard and consistent work. Whenever an end run was called, he was always there, pulling out of his guard position and clearing out in-rushing tackles. He was a tower of strength on the defense and a run was never called over his side of the line by opposing backs without Tonsmiere being in the play somewhere. The 1929 and 1930 Badgers went 7-1 and 6-2, respectively and were undefeated (4-0) both years in the SIAA. The Badgers beat Southern Miss., Jacksonville State and Louisiana in those two years, with the only losses coming on the road at Loyola, New Orleans, Auburn and Vanderbilt.
