The Biloxi native was a two-sport athlete on the Hill. As a halfback, he was described by one newspaper: “Ever see a deer running? Well this Bellande is a duplicate. Fast, shifty, hard-driving, elusive, and any other adjective that was Marcel's grid play.” Bellande’s time on the football field was cut short by a career-ending neck injury. As the shortstop of SHC’s 1930’s immortal infield, Bellande excelled. During the 1931 season, the Badgers failed to win any contests from their major and minor league opponents, but they still attracted much attention and received much praise from big league scouts in the South. Bellande in particular received high praise of scouts for his fielding and heavy hitting. After the 1931 season, "Mickey" signed with Cleveland of the American League and played professional baseball from 1931-1936. He also excelled as amateur golfer, being the only golfer to win the all three Mississippi golf championships; the Open (’50), Amateur (’64) and Senior (10 times). He was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1974.
