Arriving as a freshman from New York City in the fall of 1962, it didn’t take Ernie long to make his mark on the Hill. In his first semester on campus, Felago was voted freshman class president and helped organize a police-escorted parade of buses and cars to the McGill-Toolen Portier Center for the basketball home opener. By the spring, Ernie earned a starting spot in the outfield for Stan Galle’s baseball squad. In Felago's first college game against highly touted Nicholls State, he scored the game-winner in the ninth inning to start his career. Known for his toughness, timely hitting and grit, legend has it Ernie once single-handedly took on the entire Tulane dugout. As a four-year starter in the outfield for the Badgers, Felago had numerous multi-hit games over his career against the likes of Florida State, Southern Miss and Troy. He was a key member of the 1965 Badger team that had the first winning record in 15 seasons, taking three out of four games from then-SEC power Tulane and splitting a four-game series with Nicholls State. Ernie’s best performance that year was a three-home run game against St. Bernard College. He remained active throughout his time at Spring Hill in student government and served as president of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity.
