Edward "Eddie" C. McEvoy was a three-sport star athlete on The Hill, where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball. During these years, Spring Hill regularly competed against the likes of LSU, Alabama, Auburn and Samford. For three years, McEvoy was the mainstay of the Badger backfield and perhaps the fleetest and most sought after player in South. The Montgomery Advertiser called him “the south’s answer to Red Grange.” The Torch school yearbook commented, “We have seen Eddie play his last game for old Spring Hill with much regret. His spectacular broken field running and long dashes through masses of tacklers will be long remembered. He is truly a great athlete, gentleman and student. We shall look long and wide for another captain of the type that Eddie has set forth as a standard.” McEvoy also excelled in baseball, during a 1924 13-3 win at LSU McEvoy hit was considered by many locals as the longest home run in that ball park’s history. He played one season for the Hartford Blues of National Football League in 1926.
