Jules “Stormy” Mugnier is considered to be one of the most talented athletes in Spring Hill College history. The New Orleans native came to The Hill from Jesuit High School and immediately made an impact on the Badger Basketball and baseball teams. His Freshmen year in 1949, Mugnier led the basketball team in scoring, finishing with an 11-14 overall record and 7-8 in Gulf States Conference play ahead of Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss., Loyola and Louisiana College. By his junior year, the Badgers finished 19-8 and Gulf States Conference Champions. His senior season, the Badgers finished 14-11 and third in the GSC, sweeping Troy and Louisiana, with wins also over Florida State, Louisiana Tech and a ranked Memphis squad. He led the Badger with 18 points per game in 1952. His basketball exploits were good enough to be drafted by the Boston Celtics. He also excelled on the baseball diamond hitting over .300 for his career with his best bating average being .352 in 1950. New York Yankees General Manager Lee McPhail invited Mugnier to a free-agent camp after his 1949 season. The Korean War interrupted any Professional aspirations for Mugnier, who upon returning from the war played in National Industrial Basketball League. Later in life, Mugnier was ranked in the South as an amateur tennis player. Mugnier is the grandfather of Alabama Crimson Tide 2015 National Champion Quarterback, Jacob Coker.
