MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) baseball team used a 4-run 6
th inning and a 3-run 7
th frame to take a 9-6 non-conference road victory away from the Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) Warhawks on Tuesday afternoon at the AUM Baseball Complex.
SHC took a 1-0 lead over the Warhawks (0-4) in the 2
nd inning when left fielder
Cade Simpson drove in 3
rd baseman
Mason Bonnaffons with an infield grounder. The lead expanded to 2-0 in the 4
th inning after Simpson put a single through the right side to plate second baseman
Reis Trager.
AUM answered back with a run-scoring double to center in the bottom of the 4
th and then tied the game 2-2 in the 5
th inning by beating out a possible inning-ending double play at first with a runner on 3
rd base.
A bases-clearing double to left-center by shortstop
Antonio Felix put SHC on top 5-2 in the 6
th inning and Felix would later make 6-2 in the frame by scampering home on an infield error by the Warhawks.
The home team refused to die, however and came back with four runs of their own the bottom of the 6
th inning, scoring off a single to right, a bases-loaded walk, and bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a successful sac bunt for an RBI.
Spring Hill put the hammer down in the 7
th inning scoring the game's final three runs with a 2-run single up the middle by Simpson who later came home off a single to left by right fielder
Joe Stevens.
Simpson enjoyed a 3-for-5 day at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored while Stevens, Bonnaffons and catcher
Daniel Seres each tallied two hits. Felix collected three RBI.
Badger starter
Chance Shell went three innings with two hits, no walks and a strikeout as
Michael Novak (1-0) picked up the win in 2.2 innings of relief work with one hit, one walk and three strikeouts.
Tucker Powell earned his first save of the season in one full inning with no hits, two walks and three strikeouts.Looks like
Tyler Britton took the loss for AUM giving up three runs off two hits and not recording an out.
The Badgers (2-2) will open the home portion of their 2020 slate on Saturday at 12 p.m. when they host the Tritons (1-2) of Eckerd College in a non-conference doubleheader on historic Stan Galle Field.
