Baseball Badgers swat down Warhawks, 9-6

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) baseball team used a 4-run 6th inning and a 3-run 7th frame to take a 9-6 non-conference road victory away from the Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) Warhawks on Tuesday afternoon at the AUM Baseball Complex.

SHC took a 1-0 lead over the Warhawks (0-4) in the 2nd inning when left fielder Cade Simpson drove in 3rd baseman Mason Bonnaffons with an infield grounder. The lead expanded to 2-0 in the 4th inning after Simpson put a single through the right side to plate second baseman Reis Trager.

AUM answered back with a run-scoring double to center in the bottom of the 4th and then tied the game 2-2 in the 5th inning by beating out a possible inning-ending double play at first with a runner on 3rd base.

A bases-clearing double to left-center by shortstop Antonio Felix put SHC on top 5-2 in the 6th inning and Felix would later make 6-2 in the frame by scampering home on an infield error by the Warhawks.

The home team refused to die, however and came back with four runs of their own the bottom of the 6th inning, scoring off a single to right, a bases-loaded walk, and bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a successful sac bunt for an RBI.

Spring Hill put the hammer down in the 7th inning scoring the game's final three runs with a 2-run single up the middle by Simpson who later came home off a single to left by right fielder Joe Stevens.

Simpson enjoyed a 3-for-5 day at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored while Stevens, Bonnaffons and catcher Daniel Seres each tallied two hits. Felix collected three RBI.

Badger starter Chance Shell went three innings with two hits, no walks and a strikeout as Michael Novak (1-0) picked up the win in 2.2 innings of relief work with one hit, one walk and three strikeouts. Tucker Powell earned his first save of the season in one full inning with no hits, two walks and three strikeouts.Looks like
