MACON, Ga. – Top seed Spring Hill College baseball team advanced in the winner's bracket with a 9-4 win over No. 4 Savannah State University tonight. With the win, Spring Hill extends its win streak to nine games.
The Badgers move to 38-14 while the Tigers drop to 27-18 on the season.
Savannah State took a 2-0 lead after the first two and a half innings, but the Badgers responded in the bottom of the third when they plated three runs. It started when
Reggie Cooper doubled down the right field line. Following a pair of outs, he advanced to second when
Jordan Black was hit by a pitch. Spring Hill cleared the bases when
Jaylen Jones connected for a three-run shot to left center to make it 3-2 before the inning ended.
The Tigers scored in the top of the fifth off a one-out two-run home run to go up 4-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Badgers loaded the bases when
Alex Roux doubled, Black, and
Jaylen Jones both walked. Roux was thrown out at home when
John Webb hit into a fielder's choice.
Gavin Moran reached first after hitting into a fielder's choice. Black was out on the play at home. Now with two down and bases still loaded.
Andrew Juez's two-run single to center scored Jones and Webb to put Spring Hill up 5-4. Moran was able to advance to third on the play. Juez moved into scoring position after stealing third. Looking to score more,
Eli Benoit belted a three-run shot to left field to make it an 8-4 before the inning ended.
Spring Hill added another run when Moran hit a solo home run to make it 9-4 to lead off the bottom of the eighth.
Nathaniel Helton shut the door in the ninth to lock down the win for Spring Hill.
Starting pitcher
Garrett Lott picked up his 10
th win of the season to go to 10-1. He allowed four runs on six hits over six and two-thirds innings, while fanning four in the process.
Helton allowed one hit over two and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts in relief.
Jones and Benoit combined to go 2-for-5 with six RBIs, three runs scored, and two home runs.
Moran finished the night going 2-for-2 with two walks, an RBI, two runs scored, and a home run.
Juez and Cooper each tallied a hit, while Roux recorded a pair of hits.
Spring Hill is back in action tomorrow, No. 3 Edward Waters at 2 p.m.
