MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College baseball team dropped a midweek non-conference contest to the University of West Florida, 11-6, tonight at home. The Badgers are now 22-13, while the Argonauts are now 27-6 on the year.
West Florida in the top of the first got on the board early when it plated three runs on three hits and an error.
The Badgers got one of the runs back in the bottom of the second when
Gavin Moran tripled to center and later scored on
Andrew Juez's RBI single to right to make it, 3-1.
The Argonauts pushed their lead to 6-1 in the top of the third, but Spring Hill in the bottom half cut the lead to two when it plated three runs of its own. It started when
Alex Roux hit a solo home run down the left field line.
Following a fly out,
Jaylen Jones singled up the middle and advanced to third off
John Webb's double to left field. West Florida went to the bullpen, and the new reliever was met when Moran drove in both runners to make it 6-4 before the inning ended.
West Florida added two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to go up, 9-4.
Spring Hill, in its half of the sixth inning, with one down, put back-to-back runners on first and second. Georga Bode scored to make it 9-5 when
Robby Lopez singled to left center.
Angel Rivera took third on the play. He later scored off
Alex Roux's RBI single to right field to cut the lead to, 9-6.
The Argonauts added a run in each of the seventh and ninth innings to push their lead to 11-6 going into the bottom of the ninth.
The Badgers attempted to rally when they got a lead-off single from Webb, but a double play got two fast outs for West Florida. Juez kept the inning alive when he reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, but a fielder's choice ended the game.
Spring Hill starter
Donovan Monsees suffered the loss, falling to 3-2 on the year. He allowed four runs on six hits in two and a third innings of work.
Roux led all Badgers at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs, a run scored, and a home run.
Webb, Moran, and Juez combined to go 6-for-14 with three RBIs, two runs scored, a double, and a triple.
Spring Hill is back home on Friday when it opens a three-game conference series against LeMoyne-Owen. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
