Halftime Lead Falls by the Wayside in Loss to CAU

MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College men's basketball team led by seven at the half, but a second-half effort by the Clark Atlanta University Panthers resulted in a 96-90 win for the visitors Saturday evening in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center. 

With the loss, Spring Hill dropped to 2-18 on the season and 2-14 in SIAC play, while CAU improved to 14-6 overall and 11-5 in the conference.

The Badgers opened a 12-8 lead with 17:15 in the half when Collin Coates buried a three-pointer. SHC pushed ahead to a 27-18 lead at the 11:52 mark when Nikoloz Abuladze connected on a driving layup. 

Rocco Lamuno drained a three with 9:55 on the clock to push the Badgers to a 10-point, 30-20 advantage. Despite the lead being cut to five points with 6:11 left in the half, Alvin Cole later splashed a three-pointer with 42 seconds left to go up 48-33 before settling on a 48-35 lead at the half. 

Clark Atlanta used the first 10 minutes of the second half to cut the lead down to 68-64, outscoring the Badgers 31-20 during the stretch. The advantage later dwindled to just one point at the 9:00 minute mark before the Panthers took the lead at 70-68 with 8:09 to go. 

The lead tied or changed eight times when CAU took the lead for good with 5:50 on the clock. The Panthers led by as much as seven points with 20 seconds on the clock before Alvin Cole cut the lead to 92-88 with a three with 13 seconds remaining. Clark Atlanta used free throws from there to secure a 96-90 road win. 

Notes and Numbers:
  • Rocco Lamuno was electric with 37 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and a steal. 
  • Alvin Cole reached double figures with 18 points and four rebounds. Brian Harris added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Ruben Bos rounded out the quartet of double-digit scorers with 11 points, six rebounds, three steals, two blocks, and two steals. 
  • Spring Hill shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the floor, 38.5 percent (10-of-26) from three, and 89.7 percent (26-of-29) at the free throw line.
