GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Spring Hill College softball team fell in its opening day to West Alabama (2-1) and Montevallo (8-5) at the Gulf Shores Invitational on Friday.
Â
The Badgers started their season off facing the Tigers of West Alabama. UWA found its way onto the scoreboard first when one of their baserunners stole second, opening the door for the third base runner to score in the first inning. In the same inning,
Macy Holt answered with a sacrifice fly ball to centerfield that allowed
Bailey Cox to score a run. West Alabama came back in the third inning and homered to center field, giving the Tigers the 2-1 lead that they would maintain to win.
Â
In their second game of the day, the Badgers faced Montevallo. Spring Hill scored two runs in the opening inning before the Falcons answered with five in the bottom of the inning. SHC scored three more runs during the game, but it was not enough to overcome the eight that Montevallo would accumulate by the end of the game to defeat Spring Hill 8-5.

They Said It - Head Coach Hanna Lythberg
On the result against West Alabama
"Coach [Hannah] Fillmore and I are really proud of the girls and the way they came out today for their first game as a team. We have a lot to be positive about in the way we approached a tough competitor like West Alabama. We stayed neck and neck with a great team for seven innings and with a few more timely hits, I think the outcome could have been different. We are a young team and we will continue to get better each game."
On the result against Montevallo
"After a slow start, I was proud to see the girls hang in there and not give up. We continued to chip away at Montevallo's lead, and the team was in the game until the final out. There were a lot of positives in the game and we have a lot to look forward to in our young players."
