Warhawks push past Badgers, 9-1

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (March 2, 2022) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) Badgers baseball team fell 9-1 in a non-conference result versus the Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) Warhawks on Wednesday afternoon at Q.V. Lowe Field.

Taking to the field for the first time in more than a week due to weather and Covid-19 delays, the Badgers were locked in a scoreless tie with the Warhawks (11-7) through the first three innings as both teams looked to get work for as many pitchers as possible before upcoming the weekend's conference schedule.

In the bottom of the 4th frame, AUM broke onto the scoreboard with a 2-run double down the left field line by second baseman Clayton Phillips off the Badgers' Colin Millar (1-2) with one out.

SHC answered back with an RBI-single to right by third baseman Cam Brock that plated catcher Bryce Walker in the top of the 5th inning.

Four runs came across the plate for AUM in the bottom of the 5th inning as an infield error and a wild pitch combined with a single, a walk and a double for the Warhawks to make it a 6-1 contest. A wild pitch by the Badgers in the 6th inning tacked on another run for the home team as the SHC deficit grew to 7-1.

A bases-loaded single with one out brought in two more AUM runs in the 7th inning.

Brock and center fielder Gage Ragona tallied two hits each for SHC while Walker legged out a triple in the 5th inning. Shortstop Zach Dew of AUM recorded three hits with a double and an RBI.

Eight Badger pitchers worked the game and allowed 12 hits with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts. AUM used five pitchers to hold the Badgers to 9 hits with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts as Will Collins (1-2) took home the win in 2.2 innings of work.

The Badgers (6-5; 0-0 SIAC West) will host the Savannah State University (SSU) Tigers (9-5; 5-1 SIAC East) in a 3-game conference series at historic Stan Galle Field this weekend beginning with a Saturday doubleheader at noon and 1 p.m. single game on Sunday.
