PENSACOLA, Fla. (September 3, 2021) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) volleyball team opened the 2021 regular season on Friday with a pair of hard-fought losses to the Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBAU) Sailfish and the University of West Florida (UWF) Argonauts in the Springhill Suites Invitational.
In the morning contest, the Badgers (0-2) dropped a 3-0 decision (25-23; 25-18; 25-20) to the Sailfish (1-0) in which middle hitter
Kassandra Fairly recorded a .357 (14-4-28) attack percentage with a block assist and 3 digs. Her younger sister and setter
Jessica Fairly handed out 25 assists, a service ace and 7 digs while libero
Mikayla Boyer hauled in 8 digs with an assist.
Overall, SHC hit for a .110 (29-18-100) attack percentage with 27 assists, 2 aces, 40 digs and 3 blocks. The Badger defense limited PBAU to an acceptable .212 (41-19-104 attack percentage, but surrendered 36 assists, 7 aces, 46 digs and 11 total blocks. Amber Rowoldt and Alyse Cundiff hit for .367 (14-3-30) and .296 (15-7-27) respectively while Maddy Hooper earned 3 blocks (1-4) for PBAU.
The Argos (2-0) took a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-20) victory over SHC in the afternoon match as senior
Allison Weimer took home 12 kills for a .235 attack percentage (12-4-34), setter Fairly had 20 assists and Boyer lassoed 11 digs. The Badgers hit just .106 (28-17-104) as a team with 3 aces, 5 block (1-8) and 43 digs.
UWF slapped out a middling .237 (48-20-118) attack percentage, but added 6 aces with 11 (3-16) blocks and 55 digs.
While neither PBAU nor UWF are currently ranked in the AVCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, both teams are receiving votes.
SHC finishes play at the Springhill Suites Invitational at the UWF Field House on Saturday with a 9 a.m. match versus the 23
rd-ranked Wheeling University Cardinals (1-2) and a 3 p.m. contest with the University of Southern Indiana (USI) Screaming Eagles (1-1).
