Volleyball finishes SIAC West Cluster with three more wins

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (September 11, 2021) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) volleyball team swept to a trio of 3-0 conference victories over the Miles College (MC) Golden Bears, the Central State University (CSU) Marauders, and the Lane College (LC) Dragons at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) West Division Cluster I at the W.W. Herenton Renaissance Center on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday night, SHC cruised to a 25-11; 25-6; 25-8 victory over the Golden Bears (0-6, 0-1 SIAC) in a match that was originally scheduled to played on Tuesday, September 14, at Miles College, but was moved up to the Cluster by decision of the head coaches.

Versus the Marauders (3-4, 2-1 SIAC) on Saturday morning, the Badgers ran to a 25-14; 25-15; 25-17 win led by Emily Weinzapfel's .560 (16-2-25) attack percentage and 21 receptions. Grace Harris handed out 23 assists with two assisted blocks.

As a team, the Badgers hit for a .294 (40-15-85) average with 40 assists, five aces, five blocks (1-8) and 39 digs. The SHC defense limited LOC to .012 (25-24-84) in attack percentage with two aces, three blocks (1-4) and 22 digs.

In the weekend's final match, the Dragons (1-7; 1-2 SIAC) took the only set lost by the Badgers in the 48 hours in Memphis, but SHC would still prevail 25-6; 25-11, 23-25, 25-9. Weinzapfel tallied 10 more kills while building a .400 (10-2-20) attack percentage and Harris distributed 21 assists with two aces at setter. Weinzapfel and Mikayla Boyer hauled in identical totals of 11 digs and 15 receptions. Airyonna Weaver contributed five assisted blocks at the net.

SHC hit for a .236 (40-15-106) attack percentage with 12 aces, 48 digs and eight blocks (0-16). The Badgers held Lane to a -.105 (24-36-1114) attack percentage with five aces, 39 digs, and eight blocks (3-10).

The Badgers (6-4, 5-0 SIAC) will next play a tri-match at the University of Mobile (UM) on Saturday beginning with the Brewton Parker College (BPC) Barons (1-5) at 3 p.m. followed by the Lady Rams (8-0) at 5 p.m. in H. Austill Pharr Gymnasium.
