Badgers use 7-run 5th to rally past Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) baseball team used a 7-run 5th inning to rally past the University of Mobile Rams on Sunday night at Hank Aaron Stadium for a 9-6 victory as well as clinching the rubber match of the 5-game non-conference series.

The Rams (6-3) held a comfortable 6-1 lead headed to the bottom of the 5th inning having dismissed Badger starter AJ Fell after 3.1 inning with 9 hits, a walk and 3 strikeouts. SHC, however, benefited from 3 errors by the Rams as well as a 2-out, 3-run homer to left-center by designated hitter Nicky Gibbs to score 7 unearned runs to grab an 8-6 advantage.

Badger second baseman Frankie Timphony would tack on an insurance run in the 7th inning with an RBI-single while relievers Michael Cabeza and Dalton Baxley shut down the Rams over the final four frames. Cabeza went 3 strong innings with no hits allowed and 5 strikeouts and Baxley picked up the save by facing four batters in the 9th stanza with two ground outs and a strike out sandwiched around a hit batter.

Graham Young (1-0) was in the right place at the right time to earn the win in one inning of work with two strikeouts.

SHC 3rd baseman Mason Bonnaffons collected two hits on the night as did Timphony.

The Badgers (3-2) will travel to Livingston, Ala. on Wednesday to take on the University of West Alabama (UWA) Tigers (6-3) at 3 p.m. at Tartt Field.
