Badgers back on winning track with 3-1 win at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. (October 8, 2021) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team snapped a 2-game losing skid on Friday night with a 3-1 Gulf South Conference (GSC) victory over the University of Montevallo (UM) Falcons at the UM Varsity Soccer Field.

SHC first broke onto the scoreboard again the Falcons (7-2-1; 3-2-1 GSC) in the 39th minute of play when senior Matthew Moreno tallied an unassisted goal to send the Badgers into intermission with a slim 1-0 lead.

Carlos Fernandes gave SHC some breathing room with his third goal of year in the 51st minute off an assist by Joao Amaral, but the Falcons refused to die and sliced the Badger advantage in half just two minutes later with a goal from Simon Wittman.

Moreno put an end to any hopes of a Falcon rally in the 60th minute by putting his team-leading fifth score of the year into the net with another unassisted effort.

Badger keeper Alessandro Erdelyi (6-4) made three saves versus 10 shots and eight corner kicks by the Falcons while Salvador Plaza (7-2-1) of Montevallo made two saves versus 13 shots and four corner kicks from SHC.

SHC head coach Chris Leonardi was happy with the effort of his team, but reminds them that there is a long way to go in the year. "Tonight, we finally put our chances away," he said. "And we got the three points we were chasing after last weekend. This is a strong University of Montevallo side that we just played and I am very proud of the way the boys battled all night long. We will enjoy the win tonight and turn our minds towards AUM tomorrow."

The Badgers (6-4; 2-3 GSC) will next travel to the Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) Warhawks (5-2-1; 3-0-1 GSC) for a 3:30 p.m. GSC match on Sunday at the AUM Soccer Complex.
