MONTGOMERY, Ala. (October 10, 2021) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team battled to a tough 1-0 Gulf South Conference (GSC) loss versus the Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) Warhawks at the AUM Soccer Complex on Sunday evening.
The Warhawks (6-3-1; 4-1-1 GSC) and the Badgers played an evenly matched, yet spirited first half with neither team finding much room to perform in the offensive quarter of their fields. Disciplined defenses by both sides forced shooters into settling for long distance or wide-angled attempts at goal, leading to a scoreless tie at the intermission.
AUM would put the only notch on the scoreboard in the 52
nd minute when Phillip Spickenbaum sneaked a ball into the lower right hand corner off an assist by Lucas Batistela.
Badger goalkeeper
Alessandro Erdelyi (6-5) made two saves versus 11 shots and three corner kicks by the Warhawks while Alexander Kraus (6-2-1) of AUM made three saves versus nine shots and eight corner kicks from SHC.
After the match, SHC head coach
Chris Leonardi was blunt with his thoughts. "
Very disappointed with the result after the early chances we had," he said. "The guys kept going at a very good AUM, but we were poor with our end product. The Gulf South Conference is as tough as it gets and maybe we need to rethink the 'two games in less than 72 hours' format because there is no easy game and we are physically hurting our kids. We will get some much needed rest and be ready to play back in front of our fans on Friday afternoon."
The Badgers (6-5; 2-4 GSC) will host conference foe the Shorter University Hawks (2-5; 0-4 GSC) at Library Field on Friday beginning at 3:30 p.m.
