Badgers cut Shorter down to size, 3-0

MOBILE, Ala. (October 15, 2021) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team earned a 3-0 Gulf South Conference (GSC) victory over the Shorter University Hawks at Library Field on Friday evening.

SHC opened the scoring at the 29-minute mark when Albert Vila Truco lifted an entry into the box that both the Hawks' (2-6; 0-5 GSC) keeper and a defender attempted to intercept only to deflect the ball directly in front of Badger forward Carlos Fernandes who calmly poked in the score from a yard out.

Later in the 62nd minute, the Badgers came off a right side corner kick across the face of the goal that was corralled on the left side by Joao Amaral who passed it back high across the goal to Brogan Horniman, who subsequently entered the ball into Vila Truco for the header score.

Fernandes dramatically iced the game in the 70th minute by stripping the ball away from a Shorter midfielder and then beating the Hawks keeper one-on-one from the right side.

Badger goalkeeper Alessandro Erdelyi (7-5) made one save versus five shots and two corner kicks in 67 minutes. Fabian Keiblinger finished the final 23 minutes with one save versus one shot and corner kicks. Javy Flores (2-5) of Shorter made four saves versus 20 shots and 10 corner kicks from SHC.

After the match, SHC head coach Chris Leonardi commented, "After last weekend we knew that we needed to get a lot more of our players involved to stay as fresh as possible for Sunday. We were able to do that while getting the win. We controlled the game and I think this is a fair result. Now, it's time to recover and be ready for Sunday's big game against Lee University."

Tonight's win moved the Badgers into 8th place in the GSC standings and currently puts them in the final conference tournament slot with only five matches left in the season.

The Badgers (7-5; 3-4 GSC) will host conference foe the Lee University Flames (8-2; 4-1 GSC) at Library Field on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
