Fell tosses Badgers to 3-0 victory over UMSL

MOBILE, Ala. – Colorado native AJ Fell survived Rocky Mountain-like temperatures on Friday night to lead the Spring Hill College (SHC) baseball team to a 3-0 victory over the visiting University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL) Tritons at historic Stan Galle Field.

The Tritons (2-2) did not collect a hit against the Aurora, Colo., senior right-hander until the top of the 6th inning when 2nd baseman Matt DiMemmo punched a lead-off single up the middle, but got no further than 2nd base where Fell stranded him with two infield popups and a fly out to right. UMSL later tallied a second single off a Texas Leaguer that found grass in the 9th inning, but otherwise Fell cruised through the night, allowing just the two singles with no walks, six strikeouts, two ground-ball outs and 17 fly-ball outs.

At the plate, SHC struck for two runs in the 3rd inning when right fielder Grayson Williams brought in Cade Simpson all the way from 1st base with a double over the 3rd base bag. Simpson's headfirst slide home beat the throw when he successfully found the plate with his left hand under the tag of Triton catcher Andrew Hayden. Williams would score one batter later when designated hitter Daniel Rodriguez singled to right field.

Badger 2nd baseman Frankie Timphony brought in a third run for insurance in the 8th inning with a sacrifice fly to right to plate 1st baseman Mason Bonnaffons.

Bobby Shallenberger (1-1) of UMSL took a six-inning loss despite surrendering just five hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

The Badgers (6-6) will host the Tritons again on Saturday at Stan Galle Field in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
