Thorobrettes buck Badger women, 60-43

FRANKFURT, Ky. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team suffered a 60-43 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) West Division loss to the Kentucky State University (KSU) Thorobrettes at the William Exum Center on Monday evening.
 
The Thorobrettes (7-14, 4-10 SIAC West) and the Badgers got off to a slow start in the 1st quarter as the KSU held an 11-10 edge half the first 7½ minutes of play. SHC rallied to build out a 19-16 advantage at the 5:48 mark only to see KSU tie the score at 19-19 30 seconds later.
 
As missed layup followed by a missed 3-point attempt resulted in two baskets on the opposite end as KSU rebuilt a 23-19 lead with 2:39 to go in the half and a 27-22 bulge at the intermission.
 
Midway through the 3rd quarter, the Thorobrettes had stretched out a 38-24 lead and as much as a 49-26 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter.
 
Junior forward Katie Krout of Tuscaloosa, Ala. scored seven points with eight rebounds for the Badgers.
 
As a team, the Badgers shot 30.6% (15-49) from the floor and 20% (3-15) from beyond 3-point distance. SHC lost the ball 18 times against 13 steals by the Thorobettes defense that KSU converted into an 18-4 advantage in points off turnovers. The Badgers knocked down 71.4% (10-14) of their free throw opportunities.
 
Carnethia Brown paced the Thorobrettes with 20 points as KSU shot 37.5% (24-64) from the field and 28.6% (6-21) from 3-point range. KSU scored on 50% (6-12) of its free throws and lost 12 turnovers to four Badger steals.
 
The Badgers (8-15, 7-7 SIAC West) will next visit non-conference rivals the University of Mobile Lady Rams (13-8) on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in H. Austill Pharr Gymnasium.
