LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team won its third consecutive match with a 2-1 Gulf South Conference (GSC) victory over the University of West Alabama Tigers on Friday night at Tiger Stadium.
The Badgers and the Tigers (3-6-1, 1-3-1 GSC) found themselves knotted in a scoreless tie at the halftime intermission with SHC holding a 10-3 advantage in shots and a 3-2 lead in corner kick opportunities.
Spring Hill broke out on top early in the second period when junior
Matthew Moreno of Northplainfield, N.J., rammed home a goal in the 46
th minute.
UWA answered back in the 72
nd minute when Peter Oyetunji knocked in a shot from 15 yards out off a left to right pass across the face of the goal by Maxime Correia.
Senior forward
Donte Oliver stepped up to the challenge and scored what proved to be the game winner in the 78
th minute.
SHC head coach
Steve Wieczorek continues to marvel at his team's passion and resilience. "Tonight's performance showed focus, toughness and heart," he said after meeting with his squad. "We needed to win in a difficult environment and the boys delivered. But we have another important game on Sunday. We can't rest now."
SHC sophomore keeper
Alessandro Erdelyi (3-5) from Turin, Italy, played brilliantly in-goal over the final 10 minutes, finishing the night with four saves against eight shots and four corner kicks by the Tigers. Across the field, William Blake of West Alabama garnered 12 saves versus 24 shots and six corner attempts by the Badgers.
The Badgers (5-6, 3-4 GSC) will play the second game of a four-game road swing at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Chargers (4-5-1, 2-1-1 GSC) at Charger Park in Huntsville in a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
