Mobile, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's soccer team returned home to take on Georgia Southwestern State University Sunday and came out on the short end of a 2-1 decision.
Georgia Southwestern jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead off a misplayed Badger pass and subsequent breakaway goal by Ella Hawkins at the 3:46 mark of the first half. SHC would find the equalizer in the 21
st minute when Devon Fry tucked a nice goal past the Hurricane keeper after an assist from
Caroline Lewis. Georgia Southwestern scored a second first period goal when the Badger keeper fell on a crossing pass into the box allowing Emily Collum to deflect the ball into the net.
Spring Hill regrouped at halftime and solidified the defense while eliminating the costly midfield errors that plagued them in the first half. SHC turned up the heat on offense by outshooting the Hurricanes 12-3 in the second stanza and 18-9 overall. However, several excellent chances for the Badgers failed to produce the equalizer as neither team tallied a goal in the second half. Badger keepers
Kira Babiarz and
Grace Riley combined for 4 saves against 9 shots (6 on goal).
"That was a tough loss today," said Head Coach
Allison Whitworth. "We didn't play very well in the first half and made some costly mistakes which they capitalized on. However, we're a young team and I was proud of our effort and the fight our players demonstrated until the very end as we continually gave ourselves chances to score."
The Badgers (0-3, 0-0 GSC) will open Gulf South Conference play when they host Christian Brothers University at 1:00 p.m. next Friday, September 14 at Library Field.
