Badgers Defeat West Alabama to Remain in 1st Place

Mobile, AL – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team defeated the University of West Alabama by a score of 4-1 on Sunday. The win keeps SHC atop the Gulf South Conference (GSC) Standings and qualifies them for the GSC tournament.

SHC scored the first goal of the contest in the 14th minute when Cyril Giraud finished a nice header from six yards out off of assists from Tilman Schober and Konstantinos Varesis. Diogo Sousa would put SHC up by a 2-0 score in the 34th minute as he deftly beat the keeper off of a corner kick from Alex Lipinski. West Alabama trimmed the Badger lead to 2-1 with a goal in the 42nd minute heading into the intermission.

The game remained nip and tuck throughout most of the second half as neither team could break through. The Badgers finally iced the game with goals in the 84th and 89th minutes. Alex Lipinski provided the extra distance when he scored on a one-touch finish from 7 yards out after receiving the entry from Zach Witt and Axel Forslund. Luca Carrese put the icing on the cake with his late tally as he rebounded a shot by Lipinski that hit the post for the final goal.

"It was another difficult test for us against a strong opponent," said Head Coach Steve Wieczorek. "We knew if we could keep the set piece battle even in the match that we would give ourselves the best chance to win, and we did. I am so proud of the team for qualifying for the conference playoffs with the win. We still have a lot of work ahead of us and two more tough games this week."

The Badgers (11-1, 7-0 GSC) will travel to Clinton, MS for the completion of their home match with Christian Brothers University at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, October 17th. The match had to be postponed due to lightning.
