Women Fall to AUM 3-1

Montgomery, AL The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 Gulf South Conference (GSC) decision at Auburn University Montgomery on Sunday afternoon.

The two teams played to a scoreless draw during the first half of action with neither team able to gain an advantage. AUM outshot SHC 10-6 during the period but Badger keeper HP Fluharty was up to the challenge.

The second half action saw AUM score twice to take a 2-0 lead with goals by Ruby Mendez coming in the 50th and 64th minutes. Spring Hill answered with a goal by Caroline Lewis off an assist from Sidney Spivey in the 66th minute to make it a 2-1 game. However, AUM would give itself a little breathing room in the 68th minute when Mendez complete the hat trick with her third goal of the contest.

AUM outshot the Badgers 27-11 overall and held a 16-5 advantage in shots on goal as well. AUM took 6 corners while SHC took 6 in the match. HP Fluharty went the full 90 minutes in goal for SHC and made 13 saves in the loss.

"We had a hard fought Sunday match in the road today where we gave it our all," said Head Coach Allison Whitworth.  "Dealing with a momentum swing of a having a PK saved to giving up a goal was difficult to overcome late in the second half. The team worked very hard but we've got to be more clinical in front of the goal to get the reward for our work in the form of a goal. HP our keeper kept us in the game and had a tremendous match."

The Badgers (1-8, 1-5 GSC) will next return home to face Shorter University in a GSC match at 3:30 PM on Friday, October 5 and then a contest against Lee University on Sunday, October 7 at 1:00 PM.
