STUNNER! Badgers shock No. 8 Spartans in 6-1 rout
MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team stunned the NCAA Division II soccer world with a 6-1 home rout of the 8
th-ranked University of Tampa Spartans at Library Field on Monday afternoon.
SHC delivered the first body blow to the Spartans (1-1) in the 6
th minute of play when sophomore
Alexander Lipinski delivered a strike into the net from seven yards out on the right side after senior
Ibrahima Ndaw threaded a left-to-right pass to him across the face of the goal.
Sophomore
Tilman Schober then made it a 2-0 score in the 55
th minute after chipping the keeper from 10 yards out following another left-to-right pass through the box by Lipinski. Schober would also pick up the assists on the next two Badger goals when he teamed with Lipinski on a nice give-and-go with Lipinski finishing inside the lower far post in the 57
th minute and then by playing the ball across the box to freshman
Zach Witt who buried the ball from six yards out in the 66
th minute.
Spring Hill continued to pour it on the Spartans late in the game as
Michael Ness took a pass from
Timo Schabetsberger for a score in the top of the net in the 68
th minute. Schabetsberger then joined the scoring fun in the 76
th minute by cleaning up a deflected shot by junior
Alaye Brito to close out the Badger scoring on the day.
Tampa finally broke through in the 86
th minute when Monty Berrow scored a penalty kick against SHC reserve keeper
Otto Candies following a Badger handball in the box.
SHC keeper
Geraldo Bina (1-1) earned his first collegiate victory in 77 minutes time with six saves against eight shots and six corner kicks by Tampa. Candies earned two saves against three shots. For the Spartans, Richard Trench fell to 1-1 on the year with four saves against 18 shots and five corner attempts by the Badgers.
"I am, of course, very happy with result," said SHC head coach
Steve Wieczorek following the match and Badger celebrations. "But sometimes scores can be deceiving in soccer. Tampa had us under a lot of pressure in the first half and we were fortunate to make those breakthroughs when we did in the 2
nd period. We can enjoy the win today, but it is important for us to shift our focus immediately to an exciting and challenging weekend ahead in Florida."
The win also snaps a 0-for-4 streak by the Badgers all-time against Tampa in a rivalry that dates back to 2004.
The Badgers (1-1) will next travel to the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, Fla., to face the Florida Southern College Moccasins (1-0) on Friday at 7 p.m. (EST).
