MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team cruised to a 5-1 non-conference victory over the Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) Hurricanes at Library Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Badgers were aggressive on offense from the opening kick and scored in just the 2
nd minute of play when
Alexander Lipinski converted a penalty kick that resulted when a GSW defender held sophomore
Donte Oliver on a scoring opportunity in the box.
Lipinski made it a 2-0 game in the 12
th minute after he scored again off a give-and-go play in conjunction with junior
Alaye Brito. The Hurricanes (3-5-1) fell into a 3-0 hole in the 37
th minute after
Timo Schabetsberger took the ball up the middle of the field off a nifty assist by
Morgan Gauthier and finished with a grounder past the keeper.
Thiago Elias put the Hurricanes on the board with a header in 40
th minute as Daniel Mendsen lifted a well-placed entry pass from the top of the box off a corner kick by Shane Madray. SHC answered right back, however, when Schabetsberger scored just 12 seconds before the halftime horn as
Matthew Moreno played a nice ball over the top to
Ibrahima Ndaw who finished with a lovely touch to Schabetsberger.
Brito would tack on a final Badger goal in the 63
rd minute with an excellent chip over the keeper from 15 yards out after Gauthier fed him the ball played over the defensive line at 35 yards.
After the contest, Badger head coach
Steve Wieczorek praised his team's metal preparation for today's contest. "Going into today's game, we stressed taking the right mental approach toward our opponent," he said. "We knew that GSW is well-coached, hard-working and disciplined, so we needed to be at our best to win. I'm pleased with the victory, but we can take away points to improve as we prepare for Lee and Shorter in the week ahead."
Badger goalkeeper
Geraldo Bina (4-3) picked up the win in 67 minutes of playing time with no saves versus five shots and two corner kicks while
Otto Candies finished the final 14 minutes. Joshua Swift took the loss for GSW with five saves versus 16 shots and two corners by SHC in the 1
st period while Matthew Sherry played the 2
nd half with three saves versus 12 shots and one corner by the Badgers.
The Badgers (4-3, 2-2 GSC) will wrap up their current four-game home stand with a Gulf South Conference (GSC) match versus the Lee University Flames (4-3-2; 3-2 GSC) at Library Field on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
