MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team stormed past the Delta State University (DSU) Statesmen 6-1 at Library Field on Friday afternoon for a Gulf South Conference (GSC) victory.
After more than an hour rain delay before the start of the contest, SHC wasted no time by opening the scoring in the 2
nd minute of play when senior
Ibrahima Ndaw collected a rebounded shot by
Alexander Lipinski and immediately shuttled it back to Lipinski for the strike from less than 10 yards out.
Lipinski put the Badgers up 2-0 over the Statesmen (2-4-1, 0-3 GSC) in the 24
th minute when Ndaw found him with a pass from the left side and Lipinski drilled the ball past the keeper from 15 yards out to win the one-on-one opportunity. Ndaw drew the next blood from the Statesmen in the 28
th minute with a one-on-one beat of the Delta State keeper when
Morgan Gauthier fed him a beautiful entry into the center of the box.
The SHC bulge grew to 4-0 in the 63
rd minute when
Matthew Moreno slipped the ball through two defenders to find junior
Alaye Brito who once again took advantage of a one-on-one opportunity.
Michael Ness then tacked on a fifth goal for SHC in the 71
st minute when he chipped the keeper from 35 yards out following another pass by Moreno.
Delta State broke onto the scoreboard in the 76
th minute when a set piece shot at the top of the box from 20 yards out by Tom Bar-Yosef found the inside of the goalpost. The Badgers closed the day in the 85
th minute when
Pablo Delgado scored perhaps the most impressive goal of the day off a header after accepting a headed pass by
Viktor Kvarnlof following a quick entry from the left side by Ness.
After the game, SHC head coach
Steve Wieczorek was happy with the way his team has improve with every outing, but also recognized that his schedule gets no easier. "It was a very good total team performance today," he said. "During the week, we spoke about improving our application within the Friday game and we certainly did. Of course, I am delighted with the result, but Sunday will be the toughest opponent yet."
