JACKSON, Tenn. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team earned a 3-0 Gulf South Conference (GSC) victory over the Union University Bulldogs at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex on Friday night.
SHC grabbed a 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs (3-10; 3-7 GSC) in the 12
th minute as sophomore
Donte Oliver found forward
Alex Lipinski at the top of the box with a beautifully placed through ball past the defensive line that Lipinski used to beat the keeper one-on-one with a tap that found the lower left corner of the goal.
In the 29
th minute, SHC expanded the lead to 2-0 off a header goal by
Pablo Delgado with an assist from Lipinski after
Michael Ness placed a lovely deep crossing entry pass from the left side.
Delgado added a second header goal in the 63
rd minute as Oliver and Lipinski teamed up again on the passing sequence to hand SHC a 3-0 margin.
Badger goalkeeper
Geraldo Bina (9-3) made eight saves including three diving stops in the final 15 minutes against 21 shots and seven corner kicks by the Bulldogs. Union's Casper Nyberg (2-10) made seven saves versus 17 shots and eight corners by the Badgers.
After the match, SHC head coach
Steve Wieczorek praised the effort from both teams in a hard-fought contest. "It was a really good win today," he said. "We played some really exciting soccer at times and Union kept coming at us. They posed a few tough questions for us, but we were resilient as a team, answering them all in the shutout."
The Badgers (9-3; 5-2 GSC) now travel to Memphis, Tenn., on Sunday to face GSC foe the Christian Brothers University (CBU) Buccaneers (7-6-1; 6-3-1 GSC) at 3 p.m. at Signaigo Field.
