PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team broke a 24-match winless streak versus the University of West Florida (UWF) Argonauts with a hard-fought 1-0 Gulf South Conference (GSC) victory at the UWF Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Badgers took the 1-0 lead over the Argonauts (4-6-1, 2-4-1 GSC) early in the game when senior
Ibrahima Ndaw scored his sixth goal of the year just three minutes into the contest off a header following a solid entry pass lifted in by junior
Tilman Schober. From there, SHC relied on a stonewall defense to record their third consecutive shutout.
Following the victory, SHC head coach
Steve Wieczorek complimented his squad's achievements. "It's a tremendous performance for so many reasons," he said. "1-0 away from home. A shutout. The team spirit and effort. The will to win. I couldn't be more proud of them today, but with this group I know that they will raise the bar again for next weekend."
Badger goalkeeper
Geraldo Bina (8-3) made just one save against nine shots and four corners, but continually frustrated the Argo offense by disrupting plays and cutting off scoring opportunities. Jacob Murray took the loss for UWF with seven saves versus 11 shots and two corner attempts by the Badgers.
By recording their eighth win of the year with five games remaining on the schedule, the Badgers have secured their first non-losing season since going 10-8-1 in 2012. The current five-game SHC winning streak is the longest since a five-game streak that opened the 2012 season.
The Badgers (8-3; 4-2 GSC) will travel to Jackson, Tenn., on Friday to face GSC foe the Union University (UU) Bulldogs (3-8; 3-5 GSC) at 3:30 p.m. at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex.
