MOBILE, Ala. – Spring Hill College Director of Athletics Joe Niland will be inducted into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame on Tuesday, June 16, becoming the latest member of the Badger family to receive one of the area's highest athletic honors. Niland is part of the Hall's Class of 2026, joining Derrick Burroughs, Derrick Coleman, and Eric Yelding. The induction ceremony will be held at the Mitchell Center on the University of South Alabama campus as part of the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and annual First Light Mobile Football Preview.

For more than three decades, Niland has helped shape collegiate athletics on the Gulf Coast as both a coach and administrator. His coaching career began at the University of Tampa, where he spent four years. The next stop was Spring Hill College and then the University of Mobile. In his time, he built a reputation as one of the region's most respected leaders in intercollegiate athletics.

Before returning to The Hill as director of athletics in 2019, Niland spent 20 years at the University of Mobile, serving as head men's basketball coach and later athletic director. During his tenure, the Rams reached five NAIA National Tournament appearances, including a trip to the national semifinals in 2004. Niland compiled 347 victories at Mobile, becoming the winningest coach in program history while leading the Rams to back-to-back conference championships in 2004 and 2005.

Niland's connection to Spring Hill began long before his return as athletic director. From 1993-99, he guided the Badgers men's basketball program to a 127-60 record, two Gulf Coast Athletic Conference championships in 1993 and 1999, and two appearances in the NAIA National Tournament. He remains the second-winningest men's basketball coach in program history.

Over the course of his coaching career, Niland amassed 474 victories, four conference championships, and seven NAIA National Tournament appearances. His influence on the game extended beyond the bench as a past president of the NABC-NAIA Coaches Association, a member of the NAIA Basketball National Ratings Committee for 12 years, and a member of the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Selection Committee.

Niland's leadership also reached the national and state levels. He served as a USA Basketball court coach for the 18U Men's National Team in 2008 and 2016, he was also named the Southern States Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year in 2015. From 2018-21, he served as executive director of the Alabama Association of Basketball Coaches, continuing his commitment to growing the sport and supporting coaches throughout the region.

His induction into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame recognizes a career dedicated to competition, leadership, and service to athletics throughout the Gulf Coast. Niland's selection continues a long tradition of Spring Hill College representation within the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame, joining a distinguished group of former Badger student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and supporters whose accomplishments have helped shape the rich athletic history of Mobile.
