Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader and Claims Series Over Clark Atlanta

MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College baseball team tallied 24 runs in two games to sweep a conference doubleheader against visiting Clark Atlanta today to take the series. The Badgers took game one 16-2 in a run-ruled victory, while winning game two 8-0.

The Badgers are now 35-14 and 28-4 in the SIAC, while Clark Atlanta falls to 11-30 and 6-25 in the conference.

Spring Hill will look to go for the series sweep on Senior Day tomorrow when it hosts Clark Atlanta at noon.

Game 1: Spring Hill 16, Clark Atlanta 2 – 7 innings (run-ruled)
Following a scoreless top of the first, Spring Hill drew back-to-back-to-back walks from Jatnier Torres, Alex Roux, and Jordan Black to start the bottom of the first. Jaylen Jones kept the walk train going with an RBI walk to score Torres, making it 1-0. John Webb got in on the action when he walked to score Roux to push the lead to 2-0. Clark Atlanta got back-to-back outs with bases still loaded. Robby Lopez, Reggie Cooper, and Torres kept the inning going when they all drew walks to push the lead to 5-0 before the inning ended.

Black opened the bottom of the second with a single through the left side. He later moved to second when John Webb singled to short with one down to put runners on first and second. Black later stole third and then scored off Gavin Moran's sacrifice fly to center to give the Badgers a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Cooper walked with one down and then stole second. Following a strikeout for the second out, Cooper then stole third.  Roux walked and later stole second to put runners on second and third. Black loaded the bases when he drew a walk. The Badgers pushed the lead to 7-0 when Cooper scored on a wild pitch before the inning ended.

Clark Atlanta in the top of the fourth pushed a run across to trail 7-1, but Spring Hill added a run in the fifth and eight in the sixth to take a 16-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Clark Atlanta added a run before going on to be run-ruled 16-2.

Starting pitcher Garrett Lott picked up the win to improve to 9-1. He threw four hitless innings, allowing a run on five walks, while striking out six.

Reliever Dylan Peck earned his second save of the season. He allowed a run on two hits over three innings.

Spring Hill's 17 walks as a team today were a season-high, breaking the previous record of 13 set back on April 17 against Morehouse.

Webb led the Badgers in hits, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double, and an RBI.

Torres, Roux, and Black combined to go 5-for-8 with eight runs scored, seven walks, a double, and two RBIs.

Moran finished with a game-high four RBIs, while going 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Teammate Weston Kirk was 1-for-1 with a run scored and a three-run home run.

Game 2: Spring Hill 8, Clark Atlanta 0 – 7 innings
The Badgers took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the third and looked to build off of it. With one down, Torres homered to right field on a 2-1 count to push the lead to 2-0. Roux kept things going when he singled through the left side and later advanced to short when Black singled to the shortstop. The Clark Atlanta pitcher attempted a pick off at first, but threw it away, which allowed Roux to score and Black to take second. Up 3-0 with a man on second, Jones walked on five pitches. Black later came around to score off Webb's RBI single to center to make it 4-0 before the inning ended.

Spring Hill went on to add a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to take an 8-0 lead into the seventh.

The Badgers set down Clark Atlanta in order to secure the victory.

Starting pitcher Ray Ochoa allowed three hits over six innings, while striking out nine to earn the win and improve to 8-2 on the season.

Torres tallied three hits, a pair of runs, two RBIs, a double, and a home run.

Roux and Jones went for 4-for-7 with a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored combined.

Webb finished the game going 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
