Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Over Morehouse to Sweep Series

ATLANTA, Ga. -  The Spring Hill College baseball team swept the doubleheader part of the series against Morehouse College this afternoon in SIAC action. The Badgers picked up a 16-3 run-rule victory in game one and claimed game two with a 13-11 extra-inning win. The two wins today give the Badgers the sweep of the series.

Spring Hill is a perfect 14-0 in the all-time series against Morehouse.

Spring Hill is now 32-14 and 25-4 in the conference, while the Maroon Tigers fall to 19-18 and 15-13 on the season.

The Badgers are back in action on Tuesday, April 21, when it travels to Livingstone, Alabama, to face the University of West Alabama at 4 p.m.

Game 1: Spring Hill 16, Morehouse 3 – 7 innings (Run-rule)
The Badgers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jatnier Torres belted a solo home run. Alex Roux, Jordan Black, and Jaylen Jones followed that up with three straight walks to load the bases. After a strikeout, Gavin Moran's sacrifice fly to center scored Roux to push the lead to 2-0 before the inning ended.

Spring Hill added to its lead in the top of the second. With one down, Reggie Cooper walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Torres tallied his second RBI of the game when he singled to right to score Cooper and push the lead to 3-0.

Morehouse got one of the three runs back in the second when it plated a run on two hits to make it 3-1.

John Webb and Moran hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the third to put the Badgers up 5-1.

The Maroon Tigers added a run in the fourth to cut the lead to three, but in the fifth, Spring Hill added three more runs to take an 8-2 lead.

The Badgers in the top of the seventh pushed eight runs across to take a 16-2 lead, but Morehouse got run in its half to make it 16-3 before being run-ruled.

Starting pitcher Wyatt Brown picked up his eighth win (8-0) of the season. He threw five and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out six.

The Badgers belted four home runs as a team and tallied two stolen bases.

Ruez paced the Badgers at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Fellow teammates Torres and Moran each tallied two hits. Torres added three RBIs, two runs scored, and a home run. Moran tallied a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored.

Eli Benoit was 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored.

Game 2: Spring Hill 13, Morehouse 11 – 8 innings (extra innings)
After a scoreless first inning, the Badgers in the top of the second broke through, pushing five runs across. It started when Jones singled through the left side and then stole second. Webb reached first on an infield single to third to put two runners on. Following a fly out to left, Jones later touched home when Weston Kirk singled up the middle to make it 1-0. Webb took third on the play.  Webb later scored on Robby Lopez's RBI bunt fielder's choice back to the pitcher to reach first.  Kirk moved to second. Both runners then moved up 90 feet on a pick-off error by the pitcher. With no outs and two runners in scoring position, Reggie Cooper parked a three-run shot to left center to clear the bases and put Spring Hill up 5-0 before the inning ended.

Morehouse cut the lead to two when it plated three runs on two hits to trail 5-3 after two innings.

Spring Hill went on to add two runs in the third and two in the fourth to take a 9-3 lead after four innings of work.

The Badgers added another set of runs to take an 11-3 lead headed to the bottom of the fifth.

Morehouse in its half of the fifth added a run to trail 11-4.

The Maroon Tigers were down to their final three outs, headed to the bottom of the seventh. Morehead pushed seven runs across to force extra innings.

Spring Hill reclaimed the lead in the top of the eighth with two down and one on when Michael Singleton parked a two-run home run to left to score Black and put the Badgers up 13-11.

The Maroon Tigers had one on with two down, but a groundout to the shortstop ended the game and gave the Badgers the win.

Lopez and Cooper combined to go 4-for-7 with six RBIs, two home runs, a double, and four runs scored.

Pitcher Dylan Peck picked up the win to move to 1-1 on the year. He allowed two hits over an inning and two-thirds.

Starter Ray Ocha allowed four runs on four hits in five innings of work, while striking out five.

Kirk registered a pair of hits, a double, two runs scored, and an RBI.

Moran finished the contest 1-for-3 with a home run, a run scored, and a pair of RBIs.

Torres, Roux, Jones, and Webb all tallied hits.
