Badger Offense, Led by 5 RBI from Coley-Drayton, Sweeps LeMoyne-Owen

The Spring Hill College softball team rolled to a double-header sweep at LeMoyne-Owen Saturday evening, outscoring the hosts by a score of 29-2.

The Badgers sit at 24-18 on the season and move to 16-2 in SIAC play, remaining one game behind Tuskegee in the SIAC West standings.

Spring Hill combined for 31 hits, 8 walks, and 24 RBI in the two games. Kayla Coley-Drayton didn't start either game, but made the most of her at-bats, leading Spring Hill with 5 RBI, bolstered by a grand slam, on the day. Amanda Glowacki was 3-for-5 with 4 RBI, Jesslyn Gordon was 4-for-6 with 3 runs scored, Natalee Curry went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI and 4 runs scored, and Meadow Villar was 3-for-6, with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored, extending her hitting streak to 11 games and raising her batting average to 0.465.

Game 1: Spring Hill 13, LeMoyne-Owen 0 (5 Innings)
The Badgers scored 5 runs in the first inning and never looked back, run ruling LeMoyne-Owen in five innings. Bethany Ahrens earned her 10th win of the season, striking out 5 batters across three shutout innings.

Janci Aube led off the game with a double, then scored as Oscha Carter brought her home. Carter scored on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0 before Villar homered to center field to put the Badgers up 3-0. After Ahrens flew out for the second out of the inning, Spring Hill put together three-straight hits, a double from Molly Pitts, an RBI triple from McKenzie King, and an RBI single by Glowacki to push the lead to five after the first inning.

Spring Hill scored one run in the second inning to make it 6-0, then put up another crooked number in the third, scoring four times to grab full control of the game at 10-0. Glowacki had a two-run double, then scored on Aube's double to make the score 9-0. Gordon had a two-out, RBI-double to score Aube and reach double-digit runs. The Badgers added a run in the fourth and another two in the fifth to wrap-up the 13-0 win.

Game 2: Spring Hill 16, LeMoyne-Owen (6 Innings)
Spring Hill used a six-run second inning and an eight-run sixth inning to defeat the Lady Magicians in six innings to complete the double-header sweep.

Carter hit a one-out single, then stole second and third, which allowed her to score the game's first run when the LeMoyne-Owen shortstop committed an error on what would have been the final out of the inning, putting Spring Hill up 1-0 after the first inning.

The Badgers had the first four batters reach base in the second inning, with King coming in to make it 2-0 on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Abigail Christ. Aube's sacrifice fly scored Curry to push the lead to 3-0 before back-to-back steals of home by Destiny Pierce and Christ made the score 5-0. Spring Hill tacked on two more runs before a ground out ended the inning, holding a 7-0 lead.

Both teams scored a run in the third inning, and LeMoyne-Owen added another in the fourth to trim Spring Hill's lead to 8-2 through four.

Then, in the fifth, the Badger offense got going again, this time doing almost all their damage with two outs, putting the game fully out of reach. After Gordon scored on an RBI groundout, Curry drove in two with a double to center field. She scored on Pierce's single to right field, and then after singles by Christ and Glowacki loaded the bases, Coley-Drayton cleared them with a grand slam over the left field fence to set up the 16-2 final score.

Spring Hill and LeMoyne-Owen return for the final game of the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
