BATON ROUGE, La. - Spring Hill College's beach volleyball team opened play at the Battle on the Bayou Tournament, hosted by LSU, on Friday, losing 5-0 to Texas A&M-Kingsville and 4-1 to Division I foe Central Arkansas.

Even though Spring Hill wasn't able to get a victory against Texas A&M-Kingsville (19-5), the Sandy Badgers (8-12) battled in all five matches. Spring Hill's No. 2 team of Alessandra Lane and Claire Hayes lost in three sets, 14-21, 21-14, 15-11, and the No. 5 pair of Ella Faliveno and Mia Johnson extended the opening set of their match before falling, 22-20, 21-14. Also, the other three Sandy Badgers' teams each scored at least 16 points in a set before losing in straight sets.

Spring Hill's No. 1 pair of Marissa Peck and Jaylyne Bell lost, 21-16, 21-14, Ashlyn Whiteside and Landry Tea dropped a 21-14, 21-18 decision in the No. 3 match, and Reagan Huff and Lillie Casey fell, 21-9, 21-18 at No. 4.

The loss was Spring Hill's first in eight matches against non-Division I opponents this season.

Hayes and Lane accounted for Spring Hill's win versus Central Arkansas, beating Chandler Lawrence and Madelyn White, 21-19, 16-21, 15-9 in the No. 2 match. Like the match against Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Sandy Badgers had their moments against Central Arkansas (12-13), but were unable to turn them into match wins.

At No. 4, the new team of Huff and Tea fought hard before losing, 15-21, 21-18, 15-11, and the Sandy Badgers' No. 1 pair of Bell and Peck lost 21-17, 21-16. Casey and Whiteside made up Spring Hill's No. 3 pair against UCA and fell, 21-14, 21-18, and the No. 5 team of Johnson and Megan Pulizzano came up short, 21-14, 21-12.

The Sandy Badgers are back in tournament action Saturday, taking on a pair of Division I foes. Spring Hill takes on Nicholls at 8 a.m., before closing out tournament play against New Orleans at 3:30 p.m.
