MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Spring Hill College baseball team's early lead was enough to pick up a 13-5 road win against Auburn University Montgomery this afternoon. The Badgers this year, in the two games, tallied 25 runs, while only giving up seven to the Warhawks. Spring Hill is now 19-12 on the year, while AUM dropped to 8-22.
The Badgers made sure to jump on the board early in the top of the second. It started when
Gavin Moran homered to start the inning to make it 1-0.
John Webb followed up with a walk and later moved to second when
Andrew Juez singled up the middle.
George Bode's RBI single to center scored Webb to push the lead to 2-0, while Juez took second on the play. Following back-to-back outs,
Alex Roux walked to load the bases. With two down,
Jordan Black cleared the bases when he hit a grand slam to left field to take a 6-0 lead before a flyout ended the inning.
Spring Hill pushed its lead to 12-0 in the top of the third when it plated six runs on six hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch.
In the top of the fourth with two down and one on,
Robby Lopez reached first on a fielding error by the second baseman that allowed Bode to make it second. Bode later came around to score on Roux's RBI single through the left side to go up, 13-0.
AUM in the bottom of the sixth final was able to break through as it pushed five runs across on three hits to cut the lead to, 13-5.
The Warhawks, down to their final three outs, loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to get a run across as the Badgers got out of the jam to secure the win.
Badger starting pitcher
Donovan Monsees threw five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and a walk while fanning five. With his performance, he picked up the win to improve to 3-1.
Black finished with a season-high six RBIs while going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a triple, and a home run. Teammate Moran led the team in hits, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI.
Bode finished the day going a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate while scoring three runs and recording an RBI.
Spring Hills is back on the road this weekend when it travels to Jackson, Tenn., for a conference series against Lane College. Game one is on Friday at 4 p.m.
