HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Spring Hill College's beach volleyball team closed out play at the Spring Break Slam hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi on Saturday, losing a pair of matches to Division I foes Louisiana-Monroe and Southern Miss at the Southern Miss Beach Volleyball Complex.
Spring Hill (6-7) opened the day against Louisiana-Monroe and lost, 3-2, the same score the Warhawks defeated the Sandy Badgers by on Friday evening. Spring Hill then dropped a 4-1 decision to Southern Miss to finish out tournament play.
The Louisiana-Monroe match was hard-fought, just as it was on Friday. The Warhawks (5-9) jumped out early with a 21-15, 17-21, 15-11 win by their No. 5 pair of Calli Otjen and Katie Felts over the Sandy Badgers' team of
Mia Johnson and
Megan Pulizzano. Spring Hill's No. 4 team of
Lillie Casey and
Reagan Huff tied things up with a come-from-behind 7-21, 22-20, 16-14 win against Brooke Bankston and Maddie Peterson, but Louisiana-Monroe reclaimed the lead with a 21-12, 21-11 victory by the No. 1 team of Abby Ryno and Claire Williamson over Spring Hill's
Claire Hayes and
Marissa Peck. However, the Sandy Badgers' team of
Landry Tea and Alessandra Lane pulled out a 21-18, 21-23, 15-12 win over Samantha Rodriguez and Avery Hunter at No. 3 to tie the match, 2-2. However, ULM was able to get the overall win, as the No. 2 pair of Paige Ingersoll and Izabela Zukowska edged
Jaylyne Bell and
Ashlyn Whiteside, 21-19, 17-21, 22-20 to lift the Warhawks to the victory. In the extra match, ULM's Ava Sondrup and Spring Hill's
Monica Vargo combined to post a 23-21, 8-21, 15-12 win over the Sandy Badgers' pair of
Felicity Evans and
Ella Faliveno.
Spring Hill juggled its lineup against Southern Miss, and it was the Sandy Badgers' No. 3 team of Tea and Whiteside that got Spring Hill its lone win, as they beat Jaden White and Lillie Johnson, 21-19, 21-19. Southern Miss (7-14) took the remaining matches in straight sets, as Hayes and Peck lost, 21-7, 21-17 at No. 1, Bell and Lane fell 21-16, 21-14 at No. 2, Casey and Huff dropped a 22-20, 21-14 decision at No. 4, Faliveno and Evans lost 21-11, 21-18 in the No. 5 match and Johnson and
Isabella Granados came up short, 21-8, 21-16 in the extra match.
The Sandy Badgers are back in action on March 27, as Spring Hill travels to Florence, Ala., to compete in the Shoals Beach Bash, hosted by the University of North Alabama. Spring Hill takes on North Alabama at 10 a.m. on March 27, followed by a 2 p.m. match against Austin Peay on the tournament's opening day.
