FAIRFIELD, Ala. – The Spring Hill College baseball team split a conference doubleheader on the road at Miles College this afternoon. The Badgers took game one 8-4 and lost game two 1-0. Spring Hill is now 15-10 and 11-3 in the SIAC, while the Bears are 16-6 and 9-4 in the conference.
Spring Hill is back in action tomorrow as it looks to win the series against Miles. First pitch is set for noon central.
Game 1: Spring Hill 8, Miles 4
The Badgers got on the board in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. It started when
John Webb was hit by a pitch to reach first and then stole second. He later scored on
Weston Kirk's two-out RBI single to center before the inning ended.
Spring Hill added to its lead in the third as it plated two runs on no hits and an error. With one down,
Alex Roux and
Jordan Black each walked and then moved up 90 feet on an error by the pitcher. Roux later scored off
Jaylen Jones' sacrifice fly to left to make it 2-0. Webb, who was hit in the previous inning, was hit again to reach first. Both Black and Webb executed a double steal before
Andrew Juez walked to load the bases. Black then scored off
Reggie Cooper's RBI walk to make it 3-0.
In the top of the fifth, the Badgers plated three more runs on a hit, an error, and a pair of walks to go up 6-0.
Miles in its half of the fifth scratched a run out on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 6-1.
Going into the ninth, Jones homered to left to make it 7-1, and then Kirk doubled to score Juez to push the lead to 8-1.
The Bears in the bottom of the ninth were able to push three runs across to cut the lead to 8-4, but the rally ended on a flyout to right.
Starting pitcher
Garrett Lott earned the win for his second of the season to go to 2-0. He struck out nine, while giving up one run and not allowing a hit.
Jones, Juez, and Kirk combined to go 6-for-12 with three runs scored, five RBIs, two doubles, and a home run.
Game 2: Spring Hill 0, Miles 1 – 7 innings
Spring Hill threatened for most of the game, but in the top of the seventh with one down had the go-ahead run on second, but a double play ended the Badgers' chances.
Headed to the bottom of the seventh, the Badgers looked to force extra innings, but Miles used a walk and stolen bases to put the winning run 180 feet away. A groundout then moved him to third before a wild pitch scored the game's only run.
Spring Hill was unable to get a runner to third for the game.

Ray Ocha suffered the loss for his first of the season to fall to 2-1. He struck out eight over six and a third innings while giving up a hit and a run.
