GULF SHORES, Ala. - Spring Hill College went 2-0 on the opening day of the Badger Beach Bash Friday, knocking off Berry (Ga.) College, 3-2, and sweeping Erskine College, 5-0, at the Gulf Shores Public Beach..
Spring Hill (3-2) started the day with a hard-fought match against Berry (4-3), as three of the five matches went three sets. The Sandy Badgers' No. 3 team of
Airyonna Weaver and
Landry Tea rallied from being a set down to win, 20-22, 23-21, 15-11, and the No. 4 pair of
Mia Johnson and Alessandra Lane pulled out a 21-17, 18-21, 15-11 victory to seal the win for Spring Hill. Spring Hill's other win came from the No. 5 team of
Reagan Huff and
Lillie Casey, who took their match, 21-14, 21-9. The Sandy Badgers' No. 2 pair of
Claire Hayes and
Marissa Peck fought back after losing their opening set, forcing a third set before falling, 21-15, 9-21, 15-10.
Against Erskine (1-1), the Sandy Badgers won all five matches in straight sets.
Jaylyne Bell and
Ashlyn Whiteside took the No. 1 match, 21-19, 21-16, and Hayes and Peck won, 21-19, 21-12, at No. 2 for Spring Hill, to finish the day with a split. Meanwhile, the pairs of Weaver and Tea (21-7, 22-20), Johnson and Lane (21-18, 21-17), and Huff and Casey (21-15, 21-14) each won their second match of the day at Nos. 3, 4, and 5 to finish off the Flying Fleet.
The Sandy Badgers - who are now 4-1 against Berry and 4-0 versus Erskine all-time - are back in action Saturday, facing LaGrange College (2-7) at 9 a.m. before closing out tournament play against Huntingdon College (3-8) at 1 p.m.
