Badgers Split Doubleheader at Edward Waters

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Spring Hill College baseball team split the doubleheader part of the series with Edward Waters University. The Badgers won game one 16-8 and fell 7-4 in game two to win the series 2-1. Spring Hill is now 7-7 and 5-1 in the conference, while the Tigers are 6-8 and 1-4.

Spring Hill is home on Tuesday, Feb. 24th, when it hosts the University of West Alabama at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Spring Hill 16, Edward Waters 8
Down 2-0 heading into the top of the third, Spring Hill opened the frame with three straight singles from Reggie Cooper, Jatneir Torres, and Ethan Davis.  All three runners came around to score off of Jordan Black's grand slam to put the Badgers up 4-2 before the inning ended.

The Badgers added to their lead in the fourth, and it started when Caleb Spikes singled, then moved to second when Eli Benoit walked. A sac bunt from Cooper moved both runners up 90 feet with one down.  Torres's bases-clearing three-run home run to right pushed the lead to 7-2, but the inning did not stop there. Davis, who singled earlier, tallied his second single of the game. A wild pitch allowed him to take second. Following a flyout to center for the second out. John Webb's RBI single to left scored Davis to make it 8-2.

The Tigers added three runs in the fifth to cut the lead to three and trail 8-5, but the Badgers added a run in the sixth, three in the seventh and eighth, and one in the ninth.
Edward Waters added a run in the seventh and two in the ninth before falling 16-8.

Torries and Davis paced all Badgers in hits with three each. Torres finished the game going 3-for-6 with two home runs, four RBIs, and three runs scored.

Blacked tallied four RBIs and two runs scored, while going 2-for-4. Teammate Benoit finished the game going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored, and a home run.

Starting pitcher Wyatt Brown picked up his second win (2-0) of the season. He scattered six hits over five innings, allowing five runs (three earned) and striking out five.

Game 2: Spring Hill 4, Edward Waters 7 – 7 innings
Trailing 3-0 going into the top of the second, Davis opened the frame with a walk and then moved to second when Spikes singled to right. With runners on and one down, Weston Kirk's RBI single to right scored Davis and sent Spikes to second. Following a foul to first, Torres doubled to left center to score both Kirk and Spikes to tie the game at three for Spring Hill before a groundout ended the inning.

Edward Waters added a run in the third and three in the fourth to take a 7-4 lead into the ninth.

The Badgers in the top of the ninth loaded the bases with one out, and Black's RBI hit by pitch drove in Cooper from third to make it 7-4. The Tigers were able to end the rally on back-to-back outs to take the game.

Badger starter Nathaniel Helton allowed three runs on five hits in two innings of work to fall to 2-1 on the season.

Torries went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. His two hits paced all Spring Hill hitters.

Spikes, Kirk, and Benoit each finished with a hit.
