MOBILE, Ala. – In a battle of cross-town rivals, the Spring Hill College softball team fell short against the University of Mobile Rams in two close losses on Wednesday afternoon. Mobile claimed both victories with scores of 6-5 and 5-4.
Game 1 - Mobile 6, Spring Hill 5
Meadow Villar had the only multi-hit performance and went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored.
Janci Aube smashed a two-run homer for the only extra-base hit for the Badgers.
Bethany Ahrens (2-2) pitched 1.2 innings with four strikeouts in the start. She allowed three walks, two hits, and a pair of earned runs.
Leighanna Turk threw 4.1 innings, pitched a strikeout, but gave up six hits and three earned runs.
The Rams scored a run in each of the first three innings to take the early lead.
Then in the fourth, the Badgers struck with a sacrifice fly to left, as
Meredith Fontenot scored. Turk added a single through the right side for an RBI, knocking in Villar, and bringing SHC within 3-2.
However, Mobile responded with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend the advantage to 5-2.
Aube hit her two-run homer in the fifth to close the gap to one run once more at 5-4.
Mobile added a key run in the sixth to go up 6-4, because Aube scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to move the score to 6-5, which held as the final.
Game 2 - Mobile 5, Spring Hill 4
Aube turned in a 4-for-4 performance with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Ahrens went 3-for-4, hit a double, and drove in a run. Gordon grabbed a pair of hits and an RBI, while Fontenot notched two hits and a run scored.
Emma Curry pitched all seven innings, threw strikeouts, but allowed nine hits, three walks, and two earned runs.
Mobile took a 2-0 lead with both runs coming in the bottom of the third.
The Badgers battled back in a major way in the fifth with three runs in the inning.
Villar smashed a single through the right side for two RBIs, scoring Fontenot and Aube. Ahrens followed with a double to right, knocking in
Kayla Coley-Drayton, giving the Badgers a 3-2 advantage.
Jesslyn Gordon extended the lead with a single through the left side, and
Abigail Christ scored to go up 4-2.
However, the Rams pushed three runs across in the bottom of the seventh, winning the contest in walk-off fashion, 5-4.
Spring Hill prepares for a three-game series at Murray Field against Henderson State University, starting with a doubleheader against the Reddies on Friday at 12 p.m.
