Comeback for SHC Falls Short against Miles

MOBILE, Ala. – Down by as much as 14 in the second half with minutes to go, the Spring Hill College men's basketball team pulled within six points, but the Miles College Golden Bears pulled away for an 80-72 win Monday night in Southern Intercollegiate Athletics Conference action. 

SHC fell to 2-16 on the season and 2-12 in the SIAC, while Miles improved to 13-3 overall and 11-3 in the conference.

Miles came out in full force with a 10-1 run to start the contest, capped by a three from Shannon Jones with 16:35 on the clock. The Golden Bears kept the pressure on the Badgers and pushed to a 17-point advantage of 25-8 with 10:18 left in the half. 

The visitors reached a second 17-point edge at 6:22 with a three-pointer from David Williams to push the score to 33-16, but Ricco Lamuno hit a layup seconds later to cut the score to 33-18. Miles went on to take a 43-24 lead to the locker room. 

Spring Hill's offense sparked to life in the second half and outscored the Golden Bears 48-37 in the period. Before that could happen, Miles jumped to a 21-point edge of 45-24 with 19:26 to go. By the time the clock reached 9:49, SHC had cut the lead to 58-47 following a layup from Amaan Sanni

With 6:59 left, Jayquan Hickles connected on a layup to push the Miles lead back to 19 points at 70-51. However, the Badgers responded with a 21-8 run to cut the lead to 78-72 with 11 seconds to play when Sanni hit a layup in the paint. Unfortunately, Spring Hill ran out of time as Miles survived with an 80-72 victory. 

Notes and Numbers:

- Rocco Lamuno and Amaan Sanni both reached 24 points scored for the Badgers. Lamuno added a team-leading nine rebounds alongside three assists and a steal. Sanni posted six rebounds. 
- Spring Hill finished 41.9 percent (26-of-62) from the floor, 26.9 percent (7-of-26) from three, and 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the free throw line.

Spring Hill returns to action on January 24 on the road in Atlanta, Georgia, against Morehouse College at 3:30 p.m. locally.
