Spring Hill falls in doubleheader against #10 Mississippi College

Villar homers and extends on-base streak to 10 games

MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College softball team fell in Wednesday's non-conference doubleheader to #10 Mississippi College at Murray Field.

Meadow Villar led Spring Hill (11-13, 10-0 SIAC) during the first game, going 1-for-3 with a home run.

Mississippi College (21-5, 7-5 GSC) opened scoring with a RBI single in the opening frame of game one. Villar sent a home run over the left center field wall and tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning.

The nationally-ranked Choctaws tacked on three runs in the third inning and extended their lead to 4-1. Mackenzie King tried to start a seventh-inning rally for SHC with a groundout RBI that cut the Mississippi College lead to 4-2.

The late rally never came to fruition, with the Choctaws hanging on to defeat the Badgers 4-2 in game one.

Emily Phillips, who was named the SIAC Pitcher of the Week in between the games, pitched a complete game, giving up four runs on four hits and striking out two batters.

Villar, who was perfect (2-2) at the plate, got things started in game two with an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the first. Mississippi College responded with a pair of runs in the second inning to take the lead.

Mackenzie King reached on a fielder's choice and brought home a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game back up at 2-2. The Choctaws scored a pair of runs again in the fifth inning and regained the 4-2 lead.

Villar's bat stayed hot with her RBI double to left field that cut the Mississippi College led to one run, 4-3, in the fifth. The Choctaws batted an RBI triple in the top of the sixth inning and stayed ahead, 5-3.

Rycca Hinton brought home a run on an error in the sixth, but the late comeback fizzled out and SHC fell in the second game of the day, 5-4.

Phillips (5-3) tossed her second-straight complete game that saw five runs scored on nine hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
