Softball starts strong at SIAC Championship Tournament

ALBANY, Ga. – The Spring Hill College softball team started its postseason run strong with wins over Clark Atlanta and Albany State during the 2023 Cricket Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship Tournament at the Gordon Softball Complex on Tuesday.

SIAC Relief Pitcher of the Year Paityn Desormeaux (5-6) led Spring Hill (22-21, 17-2 SIAC) to a 9-1 victory in six innings over the No. 4 (east) seed, Clark Atlanta (18-20, 10-12 SIAC) to start the tournament run. Bailey Cox went 7-for-2 with three RBIs to lead the Badgers during the first day of the tournament.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second, when the Badgers scored eight runs, highlighted by a two-run RBI double from  Cox. The Panthers answered with a RBI single in the top of the third to make it a 8-1 game. SHC did not allow any more runs from CAU and Cox slugged another ball into right field in the bottom of the sixth to bring a runner home and secure the 9-1 run-rule victory.

Freshman pitcher Emma Curry (9-9) tossed 4 innings and struck out three en route to Spring Hill's (24-21) 3-1 victory over No. 2 (east) Albany State (26-15, 16-6 SIAC).

The Badgers opened scoring in the top of the fourth when the Golden Rams committed a throwing error, which allowed Macy Holt to cross the plate. Lindsey Mecom hit a fielder's choice RBI with the bases loaded later in the inning that extended the SHC lead to 2-0. ASU answered with a RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to bring the game back within a run (2-1). Spring Hill scored an insurance run on a fielding error by the Albany State shortstop and did not allow any runs in the seventh to secure the 3-1 victory.
