Badgers take 4-2 win over KYSU in 11 innings; Sims stands at 999

CINCINNATI, Ohio (April 16, 2022) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) Badgers baseball team earned a hard-fought 4-2 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) victory over the Kentucky State University (KYSU) Thorobreds in 11 innings on Saturday afternoon at Gendell Family Field, furnishing head coach Frank Sims with his 999th career victory.

The Thorobreds (17-17; 12-8 SIAC) grabbed an early 2-0 lead off Badger starter Jackson Short, but SHC rallied with an RBI-single by Cam Brock in the 3rd inning and a solo home run from Micah Morgan in the 4th inning to knot the game at 2-2.

Short would right his ship after a rough first frame to go 6.0 innings and limited KYSU to six hits and three walks with one strikeout before surrendering the mound to Alex Holz (2-0) who would earn the win over the next 4.1 innings. Holz held the Thorobreds to three hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Catcher Daniel Seres broke the stalemate in the top of the 11th with a sacrifice fly to bring in Luke Sweeney and Gage Ragona added an insurance run with a single to plate Grant Akridge.

With one on and one out in the bottom of the 11th inning, Norris McClure relieved Holz and on his second pitch ended the game with a 6-4-3 double play to notch his first save of the year.

In his 39th season overall, Sims currently holds a 999-926-3 record, including a 963-916-3 mark in 38 seasons at Spring Hill.

The Badgers (27-11; 17-4 SIAC) will attempt to hand Sims his 1,000th career victory on Tuesday at historic Stan Galle Field when they host the University of West Florida (UWF) Argonauts (20-16) in a non-conference game beginning at 5 p.m.
