Badgers short circuit Chargers

LAUREL, Miss. (April 12, 2022) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) Badgers baseball team took two victories away from the Southeastern Baptist College (SBC) Chargers on Tuesday afternoon at Boston Park with a 13-3 win in the opening contest followed by a 10-2 outcome in the rain-shortened nightcap.

Michael Romano (3-1) picked up the win in two innings of relief of starter Solon White while Alex Holz finished the final two innings in the first game. The Chargers (7-17) collected four hits and two walks with three strikeouts versus White and no hits, no walks and a strikeout versus Romano while Holz allowed four hits, no walks, and two strikeouts.

An 8-run outburst by the Badgers in the 5th inning cemented the victory as first baseman Micah Morgan was 4-for-4 with two homers and five RBI. Third baseman Cam Brock and center fielder Gage Ragona were both 3-for-4 with an RBI. Catcher Daniel Seres, shortstop Norris McClure, and designated hitter Bryson Kirk each added two hits to the SHC totals on the afternoon.

The second game was stopped due to rain after five innings, but the Badgers dodged enough raindrops to tack 14 more hits on the scoreboard with Morgan cranking his third dinger of the day. Grayson Williams moved from his normal right field position to first base with little effect on his offense, slapping three singles with three run-batted in. Ragona had three more hits for SHC and Brock notched two more safeties for the Badgers.

Williams took over at first base due to the move by head coach Frank Sims of putting his closer and usual first sacker Morgan on the mound. The move paid off with Morgan (1-0) earning a rare 3-inning win in his starting debut, allowing no hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Conner Ingram finished the final two frames with one hit, a walk, and three strikeouts.

The Badgers (24-11; 14-4 SIAC) next travel to Frankfort, Ky. to face Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) foe the Kentucky State University (KYSU) Thorobreds (17-14; 12-5 SIAC) in a 3-game conference series beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at noon (eastern) followed with a single game at noon (eastern) on Saturday.
