Badgers sweep DH from Magicians; Ballester tosses no-no

MOBILE, Ala. (March 31, 2022) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) Badgers softball team swept both games of a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) doubleheader from the LeMoyne-Owen College (LOC) Magicians by the scores of 12-0 and 11-0 on Thursday afternoon at Murray Field.

In the opening game, sophomore Alexandra Ballester (11-4) faced the minimum number of batters in a ho-hitter as the Magicians managed to coax a walk with one out in the 5th inning, but it was immediately erased by a game-ending unassisted double play by first baseman Paityn Desmoreaux who snagged a line drive and stepped on the bag.

Ballester struck out nine batters in five innings pitched in a game time of just 1:02 with 61 pitches.

The Badgers rolled up 15 hits with one walk, one strikeout and seven stolen bases as left fielder Sophia Nuzzolillo went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Freshman center fielder Airyonna Weaver had two hits including her first career home run – a 3-run blast to left in the 2nd inning. Third baseman Hailey Vanbrimmer had two hits with a double and a run-batted-in while shortstop Madison Koger had two safeties with an RBI.

Desormeaux (4-2) pitched the nightcap, allowing just an infield single with eight strikeouts and no walks in 1 hour off 57 pitches.

Second baseman Lindsey Mecom legged out an inside-the-park homer to center in the 2nd inning for her first round-tripper of the year while Weaver collected two doubles with two RBI and Daniella Amador slapped three hits around the park with three RBI.

Tiffany Blakley took both complete-game losses for LOC to fall to 0-5 on the year.

The Badgers (19-11; 13-3 SIAC West) will finish this series versus the Magicians (1-13; 0-10 SIAC West) with a single game at 1 p.m. on Friday at Murray Field. Following the game, the Badgers will honor their Senior Class teammates with the annual Senior Day ceremony.
